The secret to keeping a child engaged with coding is to begin with their passion and find the code later. Here are ideas grouped by interest. Each has a first step small enough to start today.
Dinosaurs
- Dino quiz (Python or Scratch). Ask five questions about dinosaurs, count the score.
- Dinosaur fact page (HTML). A web page with a picture, size and diet for each favourite dinosaur.
- Dino chase game (Scratch). A dinosaur sprite chases a player who moves with arrow keys.
First step: list five dinosaurs and one fact for each.
Space
- Rocket launch countdown (Python). Count from 10 and print "Lift off!"
- Planet weights (Python). Enter your weight and see what it would be on Mars. (Mars gravity is about 38% of Earth's, so multiply by 0.38.)
- Asteroid dodge (Scratch). Move a spaceship left and right to avoid falling rocks.
First step: choose three planets and one fact about each.
Football, cricket and other sports
- Score tracker (Python). Keep goals or runs for two teams and announce the winner.
- Penalty shootout (Scratch). Click to aim, and a goalkeeper sprite moves randomly.
- Player card page (HTML and CSS). Make a trading card for a favourite player.
First step: write down the data you want to track, such as name, goals and matches.
Animals and pets
- Pet profile page (HTML and CSS). A page about your pet with photos.
- Feed the pet (Scratch). A hunger variable that goes down over time; click the food to fill it.
- Animal guessing game (Python). The program thinks of an animal; you ask yes-or-no questions.
First step: pick the animal and list three things it needs.
Art and drawing
- Pattern maker (Python turtle). Draw squares and spirals with code. See drawing with code.
- Animated story (Scratch). Two characters have a conversation with speech blocks.
- Colour changer (JavaScript). A button that cycles the page background through colours.
First step: sketch the picture or scene on paper first.
Music and sound
- Drum kit (Scratch). Each key plays a different sound.
- Random melody (Scratch or Python). Pick notes at random and play them.
- Playlist page (HTML). A page listing favourite songs and artists.
First step: choose the sounds or songs you want.
Games and storytelling
- Choose your own adventure (Python). Print a situation, ask a question and branch with
ifandelse. - Maze game (Scratch). Move through a maze without touching the walls.
- Quiz about a favourite show or book (any language).
First step: write the story or rules on paper.
Making things useful
- Chore chart (HTML). A weekly table the family can use.
- Birthday countdown (Python or JavaScript). Days until the next birthday.
- Recipe converter (Python). Double or halve the ingredients.
How to use this list
- Let your child choose; don't assign.
- Start with the smallest working version. A quiz with two questions counts.
- Add one feature at a time.
- Finish and show someone before starting something new.
When a project is chosen, a lesson that matches it makes the work easier. Tiny Coderz lets children pick a world, like space or dinosaurs, that adapts the examples (see the free courses). For beginner Python builds, see Python projects for beginners.
